HOUSING OPTIONS FOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS TAKING SUMMER PHYSICS COURSES AT ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY.

(compiled by Jane.Jackson@asu.edu. Revised somewhat in July 2006)

Teachers who take courses during our first summer session  or ASU’s second session  or both can live in an apartment off campus and have their own bedroom. ASU dorms are available but most rooms are shared. Here are suggestions; also tips for easing your way.

OPTIONS IN SUMMER 2006:

If you have a car or are willing to take a bus, strongly consider living in Scottsdale in a privately-owned condo or apartment near downtown or farther north. You should be able to get a beautiful “winter visitor” apartment in a lovely locale cheaply, because otherwise they sit vacant all summer. Good rents are $800/month for 1 bedroom, $1000 for 2 bedroom, $1300 for 3-bedroom, including utilities.

Downtown Scottsdale is upscale, safe, and lively all year; it has art galleries, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, a cultural center, art museum, concert hall, stage theatres, and many fine shops. A free trolley. A lovely greenbelt city park runs for 20 miles or more north and south next to Hayden Road, with golf courses, bike paths, fishing ponds, and many other recreational facilities. Bus #72 on Scottsdale Road, and bus #81 on Hayden Road, go directly to ASU every half hour on weekdays, and every hour on weekends.

LouAnn Wipperfurth  <louannw@mindspring.com>   (updated e-mail, May 2002)

LOU-ANN IS EXCELLENT TO WORK WITH!

She OWNS several 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments in Scottsdale. She has 10 to 15 properties to rent in the summer. Some are near downtown Scottsdale; great locations in upscale areas. For example, she has 1, 2, and 3 bedroom patio homes at Hayden Road and Chaparral Road, 8 miles north of ASU; lovely location next to park with fishing pond; on bus line #81 to ASU (the bus stop is outside the Physical Sciences Building). WE'VE RENTED  SEVERAL; VERY ATTRACTIVE. In summer, about $1350/month for 3-bedroom (1500 sq. ft). She owns four 1-bedroom condos and a few 2-bedroom condos with washer and dryer at Winfield Place Condos (see next entry), and manages others there. Rent is about $800 to $1000/month, including phone and cable! (No connection charges, includes up to $150 electricity).  Add cleaning fee.

LouAnn wrote: “I own and manage 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condos and patio homes at Chaparral and Hayden area and I have a few units located at Via Linda and Shea. All units are  non-smoking units, no pets are allowed, all units have cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer, pool, spa,  some have tennis, very well decorated and very clean.”

WINFIELD PLACE CONDOS (6 miles north of ASU, 2 1/2 blocks to bus #72, which stops in front of the ASU Physical Sciences Building)

7430 E. Chaparral Road, 85250

480-946-7965, Kathy Sellard is manager, but you can probably work thru LouAnn Wipperfurth.

A lovely community with many big trees, in excellent neighborhood, near Scottsdale Road - 1 mile to downtown. Kathy manages 80 of their 248 condos that are privately owned. All are furnished and completely equipped. Usually utilities are extra. Phone & cable are already connected. $25 administrative fee, $80 to $100 cleaning fee (both nonrefundable); $500 refundable security deposit.

1 bedroom condo: about $800/month. 2 bedrooms: about $1000 (depends on owner). One month minimum.

   <http://www.WinfieldPlace.com> has pictures.

A good map is at <http://www.HotelWaterfrontIvy.com>, the motel across the street. Print the map!

Winfield Place is next to a canal; a great place to jog. Trees & grass; lovely grounds. 1 mile to supermarket, excellent low-cost restaurant (Randy's), city park, huge air conditioned shopping center, best movie theatre, much more.

All "winter visitor" condos are non-smoking units, no pets allowed. Cable TV, VCR, stereo, answering machine, phone service, microwave, all linens, fully equipped kitchen, , pool, spa. 2-story buildings. Very well decorated and very clean. 4 laundry rooms on premise, community building for get-togethers.

In July 2006, for a 20-night stay, the manager, Isaac, authorized $35 per night + 12.07% tax for a nonsmoking room with two queen-size beds. A mini-suite with a microwave and small refrigerator might be available for the same cost!

E-mail: GMaz132@qwest.com.

Visit their website: <http://www.comfortInnTempe.com>

They have a free breakfast, quite good and filling. They have a free shuttle to and from the Sky Harbor airport, between 8 AM and 8 PM. When you arrive at the airport, get your luggage and then call them; they'll come and pick you up.

           -------------------------------

WHAT TO BRING: a pillow, full-size or queen-size sheets. Shower curtain and hooks.

Lightweight, light-colored T-shirts, sandals, shorts.

soap & bathroom items, sunscreen, water bottle. BRING YOUR SWIMSUIT, BEACH

TOWEL, THONGS, and a PADLOCK for a locker at the Student Recreation Center.

Bring your phone, if desired.

THRIFT SHOPS: If you forget something or need a blanket to use as a mattress pad, a thrift shop, 'Gracie's Cottage', is at 1520 E. Apache.  Salvation Army Thrift Store is at University Drive and Alma School Road in Mesa (Saturdays: 50% off). Goodwill and Salvation Army thrift stores are a few miles north, on Scottsdale Road (Rural Road).

GROCERY STORES: FOOD CITY supermarket is at 1338 E. Apache. A small grocery store is at the corner of Lemon and Terrace, near University Village. A convenience store is next door to VILLAGE ON UNIVERSITY.  A supermarket is on the NE corner of Broadway and Rural Road (Scottsdale Road); that's about 1.5 miles south of University Village Apts.

RENTING LINENS: Sunshine Rentals is 4 blocks east of the Village on University.

Sunshine Rentals, at 722 S. Perry Lane in Tempe, rents linens and kitchen packages.  Call them toll-free or at 480-921-1190.  Visit their web site at <http://www.sunshinerentals.com>.

Kitchen package includes: dishes, silverware, glasses, kitchen knives, 7-pc cookware set, toaster, drip coffee maker, electric can opener, juice pitcher, mixing bowl set, baking dish, cutting board, colander, grater, peeler, spatula, kitchen utensils, corkscrew/bottle opener, tongs, scissors, measuring cups & spoons, sugar & creamer, salt & pepper shakers, dish towels & dish cloths, pot holders, scrubber, large wastebasket, broom, dust pan.

If you want to cook lightly (say, just breakfast), and you fly here, see Jane Jackson; she has lots of silverware, dishes, pots & pans, toasters, shower curtains, and kitchen stuff near her office in PS-H561, left over from teachers who were here before. (Sheets & a blanket too, & a TV.)

Or try Gracie's Cottage, or buy plastic dishes at FOOD CITY.

HELPFUL HINTS:

Tempe Bicycle, a reliable long-time business a few blocks from campus, sells good used bicycles from $50 on up. They have many in the summer! Gracie’s Cottage, a thrift store on 1520 E. Apache Blvd (967-5231), sells used bicycles as-is.

City bus fare is $1.25. A free “Flash” bus goes around the ASU campus and to downtown Tempe every 10 minutes.

If you plan to go camping, the Student Recreation Center at ASU rents 2-person tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, backpacks, etc. very reasonably!

LOGISTICS OF THE ASU CAMPUS:

DIRECTIONS TO ASU:

Print the ASU map at <http://www.asu.edu/>

If you're driving on the 202 Loop: Get off at Rural Road (Scottsdale Road). Turn south.

The ASU main campus is quiet in summer, with few traffic jams. Much construction is occurring in 2006 for the light rail. Veterans Way (it used to be called Stadium Drive) is closed until Aug. 15. University Drive is sometimes one lane each way, near College Avenue. The only entrance to Parking Structure #5 is on College Avenue at 6th Street.

LOCATION OF CLASSROOMS  PS H356-358 and 357:

The Bateman Physical Sciences Center, wing H, is on University Drive, west of Rural Road and east of College Avenue. It's just east of the pedestrian bridge, on the south side of the street, just east of the Student Health Center. Walk into the breezeway of the Physical Science Center. Turn west and go inside. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor and walk east, down the hall to room PS-H 356-358 or 357.

PARKING ON ASU CAMPUS: (costs are in 2006.)

A) For enrolled students: $25 for the summer (lot 59), $80 (parking structures; no rental cars allowed -- the closest one is Structure #5, 1/2 block north of the Physical Sciences Center).

B) For conference attendees (e.g., teachers who take courses for noncredit):

  1) The group rate is $25 for the entire summer to park in lot 59 (about 4 blocks north of our building, east of the stadium; free FLASH bus goes from that lot to our building). Purchase at Decal Sales office in the Towers.

  2) Free street parking can be obtained in summer on 8th Street east of Rural Road, but you must get there early in the day. If you ever want to visit the CRESMET library at the University Center, 1130 E. University, the huge parking lot there is free.

C) For occasional parking (say, on your first day):

   1) The closest visitors' parking structure is the FULTON GARAGE at the new ASU Foundation building, one block west of the Bateman Physical Sciences Center. From Rural Road, turn west (right) onto University Drive.  Drive past the pedestrian bridge, and turn right into the Fulton Garage.  Or take the first right (at the light) onto College Avenue and turn right into that same garage. $2/hour, maximum $8/day. Validation stickers apply. (An ASU department can purchase all-day validation stickers in sheets of 10 for $60 at the Appeals Office in the Towers; can pay cash.)

   2) CITY OF TEMPE parking lot at College Ave. & 6th Street (east side; just west of Parking Structure #5, 1/2 block north of Fulton Garage). The lot is usually empty in summer. $.75 per hour from 8am to 6pm; FREE after 6pm and all day Sunday. Maximum $5/day. Pay in quarters, dollar bills, small change.

   3) LOT #42: Drive south on Rural Road, past University Drive. Turn right (west) at Lemon Street, just after Parking Structure #4.  Turn right (north) into the visitor PARKING LOT #42.

(This lot is east of McAllister Avenue, east of the Law Library, and west of Parking Structure #4.). Walk north on McAllister Avenue to Tyler Street, turn LEFT (west), and walk past 3 buildings to the Bateman Physical Sciences Center (on your right, northwest of the Noble Science Library).

   4) METERED PARKING is just east of our building, on the south side of University Drive (lot #46), west of McAllister Avenue, opposite the high rise dorms on University Drive that are east of the pedestrian bridge. $1/hour in quarters, maximum 1 hour. FREE after 7pm and all day Sunday.

If you're carpooling, several teachers can share one hanging decal & include all license plate numbers.

To pay for your parking: Go to Parking & Transit Services building (in the TOWERS), 5th St between Forest & College Ave.  Decal Sales room.  Open 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM M-F.  (480) 965-6124.  Have ready: license plate info, parking permit application, photo ID, and payment (cash, check, Mastercard, Visa).

(We suggest that you get your parking decal the week before your course starts. If that's impossible, consider parking on the first day in the FULTON GARAGE at the NE corner of University Drive and College Avenue; enter from College Avenue or University Drive. Or park in the CITY OF TEMPE parking lot at College Ave & 6th Street.)

CAR RENTAL:

If your housing is within walking distance to ASU, you don't need a car during the week.

Teachers like to carpool to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, etc. on weekends. Cars can be rented inexpensively for weekends at Enterprise Car Rental in Tempe & near the condos in Scottsdale, or at Dollar Rental next to ASU in Tempe. You save 11% airport tax, etc. Since tourists aren't here, rental agencies have money-saving coupons all summer long.

OTHER HOUSING POSSIBILITIES:

I. DORMS.

ASU’S GRADUATE DORM:

You can apply to ASU for a 2-bedroom, 1-bedroom, or a studio dorm apartment in the graduate F and G wings of Cholla Hall on Rural Road, the east end of campus; Cholla is the only dorm open to students in summer. Download a dorm room application at http://www.asu.edu/reslife. (If you don’t have web access, e-mail me for a pdf application form.)

For a 5 week session, a studio apartment in 2001 was $522 (few exist; apply early!), a shared 1 bedroom apt. is $472 for each person, and a shared 2-bedroom apt costs $390 for each of the 4 students. $75 non-refundable application fee. Request a room on the north or east side; it’s coolest. I’VE BEEN IN A 2-BEDROOM APARTMENT; IT WAS SPARTAN AND SMALL. I SUGGEST THAT YOU RENT OFF CAMPUS INSTEAD. (For assignment/billing problems, call Lucile Hildebrandt at 480-965-5336).

Students may choose to prepare meals in the apartment or buy one of a few types of cafeteria meal plans for less than $18 per day; the only open cafeteria is in the Memorial Union, in the center of campus. Several cafes are in the immediate neighborhood.

I downloaded the following info from http://www.asu.edu/reslife/cholla.htm :

“Cholla Apartments provide studio (single occupancy); one bedroom (double occupancy); and two bedroom (quadruple occupancy) accommodations. This coed apartment style community provides 24-hour campus security and front desk services, a computer lab, community laundry, kitchen facilities, vending machines, air conditioning, a swimming pool, volleyball court and basic cable. Cholla’s F and G wings house Graduate students.”

Amenities include: Twin beds (36x80), Desk & chairs, Kitchen Table & Chairs, Waste/Recycle basket, Dressers & Closets, Floor Lamp, Vanity, Bookshelves, Shower, Corner Table, 1-Person Sofa Chair, 2-Person Sofa Couch, Refrigerator, Stove & Oven. Floor plans can be viewed on www page.

II. FURNISHED APARTMENTS:

I list 3 categories of apartments by city: Tempe, Scottsdale, and Mesa. In each category, apartments/condos are listed from best to worst, roughly;  keep in mind that I don’t have direct experience with some of them.

Some helpful hints for rentals are:

Tax for rentals of less than a month is 11%. If you stay for 1 month or longer, the tax is about 1.5%. So it’s to your advantage to stay 1 month or 5 weeks, rather than 4 weeks. (When you sign your rental agreement, be sure to specify at least a month or 5 weeks; otherwise you might pay 11% tax and not get it refunded.)

If you pay electricity, request a 1st floor apartment; your bill will be less (in a multistory building). Ask about ceiling fans. Ask about covered parking, for car batteries die fast in the heat. North-facing or east-facing apartments may be cooler. Trees help. (To help you estimate: my electric bill in July is typically $125 for my 1600 sq. ft. house. I keep the thermostat at 80 degrees.)

           Phone hookup costs about $45.

For some apartments in Tempe you must bring your own dishes, pots & pans, kitchen utensils, phone, TV. A partial alternative is to try the Gentle Strength Co-op’s Free Store (234 W. University) or buy them at a thrift store - one is within walking distance of ASU. We have a couple of televisions and miscellaneous bedclothing, towels, and dishes stored away in the Physics Dept. that we can lend if you tell us beforehand.

A. OTHER FURNISHED APARTMENTS WITHIN WALKING/BIKING  DISTANCE OF ASU:

THE MEMORIAL UNION at ASU has an apartment service for students: they maintain an electronic bulletion board of ads for (a) apartments, rooms, & houses available (most in Tempe are unfurnished) and (b) roommates/housemates wanted (ask if it’s furnished). Each ad is removed after 1 week. Visit http://www.asu.edu/mu/services. Click on “ad board”.  Or you can visit http://www.asu.edu/students  and click on Student Union, etc.

Also, you can use the apartment search function offered through the STATE PRESS web site at www.statepress.com/ent (click on “Devil’s Playground”, then click on “Live”).

Not available again until summer 2007!

CONNIE LOOKS LIKE A FINE PROSPECT TO WORK WITH!

Connie manages 3 dozen properties, individually owned and rented to winter visitors. About 12 to 15 are available to rent in summer. Most are in upscale north Scottsdale, in McCormick Ranch and Scottsdale Ranch areas (about 12 miles from ASU). This season has been slow, she said. Most properties are vacant in summer.

A 2-bedroom at Hayden Road & Via de Ventura (I USED TO LIVE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD - a great location, in McCormick Ranch: many trees, near park!) is $750/month + electricity. On bus line #81 to ASU, about 11 miles north of ASU.

She has a large 2-bedroom at Hayden and Thomas Road (about 5 miles N-NE of ASU) that rents for $850/month in summer, + electricity. On bus line #81.

ARROWPOINT REALTY

Sheryl Braun <sbraun@amug.org>

arrowpointrealtyinc.com  (has some photos)

SHERYL LOOKS LIKE A FINE PROSPECT TO WORK WITH!

Sheryl told me that June & July are excellent months - 1/2 price! She has 1, 2, and 3 bedroom condos, individually owned, most in Scottsdale. She’s inspected them all. Some owners want a 6-month lease; others are happy just to rent them at all. She wrote me on Feb. 20, 2001:

“Most of our furnished properties will be available in June and July.  The prices range from $650 per month to $2600.  Each one will vary as far as utilities being included, but they will already be turned on.

           South Scottsdale:

2nd Street near 68th Street, Americana Condos, 2 bedroom but one is for children (bunk beds): $895. (Jane’s note: I stayed there in 1984 when I moved to Phoenix. Good place then; quiet. Some crime nowadays, but still well-maintained. Price might be too high.)

68th St. between Camelback Rd and Chaparral Rd, Camelback House: 2 bedroom 2 bath, $750. (Jane’s note: a friend of mine lives there. This is an excellent price in a very good location within walking distance to downtown, & 2 blocks from huge air conditioned mall. Pool, covered assigned parking, trees, grass. A bit noisy in apartments that are near the 2-lane street; but most are ‘way back from street. 5 blocks to bus #72 to ASU.)

           North Scottsdale:

92nd St. & Mountain View, Racquet Club. We have many in this complex, different owners, different prices: 2 bedroom 2 bath: $800. 1 bedroom 1 bath: $800. 2 bedroom 2 bath: $850. 2 bedroom 2 bath: $900. 2 bedroom 2 bath: $950. (Jane’s note: a few years ago I was thinking of buying a condo at the Racquet Club. A great place! Gated community, fabulous recreational facilities, lovely grounds. These are excellent prices if they include electricity! About 12 miles north of ASU, 5 blocks east of bus line #82.)

           Mid Scottsdale (McCormick Ranch area):

Villa De Villarta: 1 bedroom 1 bath: $795.

These are our low end units but are all very clean and rent for two times this amount quite successfully in the winter months.  We have many repeat customers so the units are nice and our service is efficient. I can find dozens more but wanted to give you an idea.”
