All courses can be taken by degree-seeking and non-degree students, or for CEUs (i.e., non-credit – use for re-certification, or to prepare for the NES content test, or for personal benefit.)

 

In addition to the courses listed below: each summer PHS 598 (Leadership Workshop) is held on Friday afternoons for 8 weeks: the same 8 weeks as our other courses. Teachers in the MNS degree program learn to do action research in this 1-credit course. Then they do action research in their classes during the school year. The following summer, they can earn credit for PHS 593: Applied Project (Action Research), in flexible formats and dates, typically for 2 credits.

 

Introductory Modeling Workshops are offered each year. Advanced or 2nd semester Modeling Workshops and Category II & III courses are rotated every 2 to 4 summers, depending on instructor availability and teacher interest. Syllabi: http://modeling.asu.edu/MNS/MNS.html .

Rationale: The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) policy manual (rev. 2/2013) states:

                        ------------------------

An hour of work is the equivalent of 50 minutes of classtime (often called a "contact hour") or 60 minutes of independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit.

 

Ordinarily, a course must cover a 1-week period for every unit of credit given. During summer sessions, however, 6 units of credit may be given over a 5-week period.

2. Workshops must involve a minimum of 45 hours for each unit of credit, including a minimum of 15 contact hours, with the balance of the requirement in homework;

3. Studios must involve at least 30 contact hours and at least 15 hours of homework for each unit of credit;...
